Vicenza ZTL: hours, cameras and who can drive in

Right now in Vicenza

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails. Reading the varco sign.

In Palladio's city, the whole historic core inside the old walls is a single ZTL that is closed around the clock. The pedestrian areas within it work on the same permits and the same cameras, and the council treats the two together as “ZTL e AP”. The Basilica Palladiana on Piazza dei Signori, Corso Palladio, the Teatro Olimpico and Piazza del Duomo are all inside. The scheme has been in place since 1996, and there is no time of day when it opens to everyone.

For visitors that makes things straightforward: there is no ticket to buy, and the only legal ways in are staying at a hotel inside the zone or holding a disabled parking badge. One exception is worth knowing: the Corso Fogazzaro entrance issues no fines during the day on working days. And since June 2026, Porta Castello, the old way in along Corso Palladio, has been closed to cars.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Centro storico (con aree pedonali)

From Piazzale De Gasperi to the Teatro Olimpico on Piazza Matteotti, and from Contrà Mure Carmini to Contrà Mure Pallamaio: about 85 streets on the list published in 2017, including Contrà Porti and Contrà Santa Corona. With the building work on Piazzale De Gasperi, the stretch of Corso Palladio just inside Porta Castello has become pedestrian; permit holders who used to enter there now use the Contrà Pedemuro San Biagio entrance.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included. Exception: the “Varco di corso Fogazzaro” entrance is only checked at certain times (see below).

The entrances are watched by 7 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Varco di corso Fogazzaro

The entrance on Corso Fogazzaro, at the corner of Contrà Busato. Note that Italian “giorni feriali”, the days when it is free in the daytime, include Saturday; Sunday counts as a public holiday and is checked all day. 8 September, the patron saint's day, is treated like a Sunday.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, this entrance is open, but the rest of the “ZTL Centro storico (con aree pedonali)” zone keeps its own hours.

A single camera checks the entrance.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive. To compare with other cities, see the guide to hotels inside a ZTL.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (€16 temporary permit under 48 hours (vehicle up to 3.5 t; goods, building sites), €32 temporary permit under 48 hours (vehicle over 3.5 t or with use of public land)), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and, depending on your contract, may charge an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate. Admin fees, timings, appeals: see our guide to rental cars and ZTLs.

At a hotel, it is the establishment inside the ZTL or a pedestrian area that adds your number plate to the whitelist, straight away: on arrival or when you book, with the date, arrival time and length of stay. Registering within 48 hours afterwards is only allowed after a technical failure. You then get a parking permit to display on the dashboard; its price is not published. These rules no longer appear on the council's current website, so if in doubt ring the Ufficio ZTL on 0444 545311 (Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9:00 to 12:00).

With a disabled parking badge, Vicenza does not use the national platform but the Veneto regional network, ZTL Network, run through the Vivipass app. A badge from another town in the Veneto is registered with that town, and then works across the whole network. With a badge from another region or another country, you email form Z07.01 to permessi.circolazione@comune.vicenza.it; the plate is only authorised once the confirmation email arrives.

Residents pay for their pink permit with two €16 revenue stamps, once only, with a check in the fifth year: an administrative fee rather than an annual charge. Goods go first through the council's logistics platform, Veloce, which delivers every day from 7:00 to 20:00; a delivery permit is only an exception, and the limit is 3.5 tonnes. For motorbikes, scooters and electric cars no rule is published: the original 1996 ordinance is not online, and nothing shows that they may enter freely.

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies within the same ZTL, even if you drive through several times (article 198); two different zones mean two fines. For drivers living abroad, the notice can arrive up to 360 days after the offence. No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out. Amount, deadlines and appeals: all about the ZTL fine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive to the Basilica Palladiana or the Teatro Olimpico?

Not without a permit: both are inside the historic-centre ZTL, which is closed day and night. Park outside the old walls and walk in.

Is there a day ticket for tourists in Vicenza?

No. Permits of under 48 hours (€16 or €32) are only for deliveries, building work and markets.

My hotel is in the old town: what do I need to do?

Give the hotel your number plate when you book or on arrival: the hotel registers it. A hotel outside the zone cannot do this.

Can I enter via Corso Fogazzaro without a fine?

Yes, from Monday to Saturday between 9:00 and 20:00 that entrance issues no fines. It is checked at night from 20:00 to 9:00, and all day on Sundays, public holidays and 8 September.

I have a foreign disabled parking badge: how do I get in?

Email form Z07.01 to the council before you drive in, or within 48 hours at the latest, and wait for the confirmation email.
