Right now in Verona

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails.

Plenty of travel guides still mention times of day when anyone could drive into Verona's old town. Those windows dated from 2005 and were scrapped on 28 October 2024: since then the Città Antica ZTL has been closed to general traffic day and night, with no ticket to buy. For a visitor from abroad that leaves three ways in by car: staying in a hotel or B&B inside the zone, travelling with a disabled parking badge, or driving a fully electric car registered in advance.

The most expensive trap is Piazza Bra, in front of the Arena: closed to all vehicles, it has been watched by a camera since 21 September 2026, as has the Ponte Aleardi.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Centro storico (Città Antica)

The loop of the Adige between the Castelvecchio bridge and the Ponte Aleardi, closed off to the south by Via degli Alpini, Piazza Bra, Via Roma and Corso Castelvecchio. Around 300 streets, including Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza Duomo, Corso Cavour and Via Cappello, home of Juliet's House.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

11 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.

List of the 11 cameras (varchi)

Lungadige Rubele · Via Leoni · Via Malenza · Ponte Garibaldi · Lungadige Panvinio · Riva San Lorenzo · Via Cantore · Via Dogana · Via Fratta · Via Nizza · Piazzetta Municipio

Area pedonale (APU) di Piazza delle Erbe

The Piazza delle Erbe pedestrian area, with Via Pellicciai, Via Cairoli, Corte Sgarzarie and the last stretches of Corso Porta Borsari and Corso Sant'Anastasia. Enforced by camera since 1 February 2025. Electric cars cannot enter, nor can guests of hotels located elsewhere in the ZTL.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included.

The entrances are watched by 3 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Piazza Bra

Driving across the square itself is banned, and a reserved lane runs along Via degli Alpini and Corso Porta Nuova as far as Via dei Mutilati. Among two-wheelers, only bicycles are allowed.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

Ponte Aleardi (corsia preferenziale)

The ban applies in one direction only, from Lungadige Capuleti towards Lungadige Galtarossa. Bicycles, mopeds and motorbikes ride through freely.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (€10 for 3 days), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and usually charges an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate.

Opera nights at the Arena (May to October; in 2026, 2 May to 10 October): from 20:00 until the show ends, the city closes Piazza Bra, Via degli Alpini, Corso Porta Nuova and the streets nearby. There is no camera: officers close the streets on the spot, and there is no exemption for the audience. The city points them to car parks near the zone, such as Park Arena or Parcheggio Centro.

Santo Stefano, in the Veronetta district: a new ZTL with a camera at the entrance to Via Santo Stefano, issuing fines from Monday 2 November 2026. Its hours had not been published when we checked: treat the street as closed.

The 4 free entries a month booked in the Tap&Park app are only open to residents of the city and province of Verona. They do not apply to tourists from abroad.

Where you stay: hotels, B&Bs, residences and holiday homes inside the ZTL register plates through the CityPASS scheme. Short-term rental flats without services (locazioni turistiche) are excluded. A registered entry covers driving to your accommodation with a single stop; for parking, the hotel applies to AMT3 for permits (price not published). If your plate is typed wrongly, the fine is yours: double-check it at reception.

Electric cars: registration, valid for 12 months, is done online with SPID or CIE, the Italian digital identity, and takes up to 9 days.

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies for the same ban, even if you drive through several times (article 198). No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive up to the Arena in Verona?

No. Piazza Bra is closed to all vehicles and has had a camera since 21 September 2026, and the ZTL around it is closed 24 hours a day. Park outside the zone, for instance at Park Arena.

Is entry free in the evening or on Sundays?

No, not since 28 October 2024. The remaining time slots are reserved for residents of the city and province.

I have rented a flat in the old town: can I drive in?

Only if it is a recognised accommodation business (hotel, B&B, residence, holiday home) that registers your plate. A short-term rental flat without services cannot.

I'm going to the opera at the Arena: is there an exemption?

No. On performance nights the streets around Piazza Bra are closed by officers from 20:00 until the end of the show, with no exception for the audience.

Can motorbikes go into the old town?

Yes, into the ZTL and over the Ponte Aleardi, with no permit needed. They are banned from the Piazza delle Erbe pedestrian area and from Piazza Bra.
