Right now in Turin

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails.

Three hours a morning, Monday to Friday: Turin's main ZTL is only switched on for 15 hours a week, from 7:30 to 10:30, and it shuts down altogether for a fortnight in August. The rest of the time, anyone can drive into the historic centre.

The traps lie elsewhere. Inside the ring, three sub-zones keep their own hours every day, August included: the streets reserved for buses and trams are closed from 7:00 to 20:00, the Quadrilatero Romano every evening from 21:00, and pedestrian streets such as Via Garibaldi and Piazza San Carlo day and night. So turning up at 11:00 is not enough: the street you take matters too.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. It must do so within 10 days of your entry. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and usually charges an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate.

The easiest option is a car park entered from outside the ZTL: Roma, San Carlo, Vittorio, Re Umberto and Galileo Ferraris need no paperwork at all. In car parks inside the zone, you currently fill in a form on site by 11:00 so that your number plate is passed on; the automatic registration announced for “after the summer” of 2026 still has no start date.

At a hotel, only establishments inside the ZTL that are accredited with GTT can register your plate, via a request filled in at check-in for your whole stay. It covers the bus-only streets on the day you arrive and the day you leave only, and cars below Euro 3 are excluded.

The electric car permit still costs two €16 revenue stamps, runs until 31 December 2026 and does not cover pedestrian areas or bus lanes; for a one-off visit you can also ask GTT to clear the passage afterwards, up to 12 times a year. The hybrid permit (€101.81) is for Turin residents and companies only. Turin appears on the list of the national CUDE platform for disabled badges but is not connected to it: with a badge issued elsewhere, send form MOD.ES.2 to permessiztl@gtt.to.it, with the badge holder on board. Outside the centre, several bus lanes are camera-controlled too (Corso Sommeiller, Corso Orbassano…), at hours that are not published. Finally, the city never sends text messages about ZTL fines: an SMS asking you to pay is a scam.

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies for the same ban, even if you drive through several times (article 198). No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Turin's ZTL active at weekends?

The ZTL Centrale is not. But the bus-only streets stay closed from 7:00 to 20:00 every day, the Quadrilatero Romano every evening from 21:00, and pedestrian streets at all times.

What time can I drive into central Turin?

Before 7:30 or after 10:30 on weekdays, and at any time at weekends, keeping out of pedestrian streets and bus lanes.

My hotel is in the centre: what do I need to do?

Check that it is inside the ZTL and accredited with GTT, then fill in the request at check-in. Bus lanes are only covered on your arrival and departure days.

Can an electric car enter Turin's ZTL?

Yes, with the two-year permit, which non-residents can also get, or by asking GTT to clear the passage afterwards, up to 12 times a year. Visitors' hybrids get no exemption.

Can I drive to dinner in the Quadrilatero Romano?

Not to the door: the Area Romana closes at 21:00, and at 19:30 on Piazza Emanuele Filiberto, motorbikes included. Park before you get there.
