Right now in Trento

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails. Signs and cameras: the guide.

Trento has no quiet hour: its historic centre is closed to unauthorised vehicles at all times, every day, and the city sells visitors no ticket at all. The ZTL rules (the “Disciplinare”) even list more cameras at the exits than at the entrances, 11 against 7, so a driver who turns in by mistake and hopes to slip out unnoticed still passes a varco on the way out.

There is just one ZTL, in two tiers: the historic centre, and at its heart a pedestrian area that is even more tightly closed. Apart from disabled badge holders, a visitor can only drive in when staying at a hotel inside the zone, parking in a garage located there, or holding a temporary permit for a specific reason.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Centro Storico (ZTL-CS)

Some 90 streets, from Via San Marco to Via Galilei, including Via Roma, Via Mazzini and Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore. The whole of Piazza della Mostra was added on 28 February 2023, and Via della Mostra has been closed to all through traffic since then, bicycles excepted. The green, red and blue zones in the city's documents only govern residents' parking.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included.

18 cameras read number plates: 7 at the entrances and 11 at the exits.

Inside, the speed limit is 30 km/h.

List of the 18 cameras (varchi)

ZTL Pedonale (ZTL-P)

Piazza Cesare Battisti, Via Oss Mazzurana, Via Diaz, Piazza Pasi, Piazza Lodron, Via del Simonino and the lanes around them. Vehicles must move at walking pace, and a permit for this zone is valid for the whole centre, not the other way round. No separate camera list is published: you can only reach it after entering the ZTL Centro Storico.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive. This access is only for dropping off or picking up luggage: you may stop for 30 minutes at most, then the car must leave the zone. Hotels in a ZTL: what to do, with each city's deadline.

Using a car park inside the zone

The garage registers your plate. Check with the attendant when you arrive.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (temporary permit for special needs, to be requested from Trentino Mobilità at least 2 working days ahead, price not published), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and, depending on your contract, may charge an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel or garage covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate. What the rental company charges, and how to avoid it, is covered in a separate guide.

Temporary permits are issued by Trentino Mobilità, the publicly owned company that handles permits (online, one plate per application, or at the counter at Via Roberto da Sanseverino 29), and must be requested at least two working days ahead. No price is published anywhere. In an emergency, the Polizia Locale station at Via Maccani 148 issues them for the same or the next day, Saturdays and public holidays included, until 20:00; an officer on the spot can also grant a permit for one hour at most. An unplanned entry in a genuine emergency must be reported to the Polizia Locale within 48 hours.

At a hotel, give your plate to reception on arrival and on departure, and take the shortest route. No deadline is published, so hand it over at check-in. There is no daily parking rate for guests, but the hotel can buy annual spaces at the ex-Sit car park on Via Canestrini (one per three rooms, six at most): ask when you book. As for garages, Autorimessa Europa registers its customers' entry itself during opening hours.

Being entitled is not enough: even taxis and delivery vehicles admitted without a permit must have their plate added to the whitelist, or a fine follows. Lorries may deliver in the centre on weekdays from 7:00 to 10:00 and 14:00 to 16:00, on Saturdays from 7:00 to 10:00, and in the pedestrian area only from 7:00 to 10:00; fresh food gets longer slots, public holidays excluded. Only bicycles truly ride in freely; electric cars just get a discount, of an unpublished amount, on residents' permits.

Two traps: cutting through the ZTL as a shortcut is banned even with a permit, and a mistyped plate is fined like an unauthorised entry unless you can prove a clerical error. Photos of a passage can be viewed on the city's MulteOnline portal.

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies within the same ZTL, even if you drive through several times (article 198); two different zones mean two fines. For drivers living abroad, the notice can arrive up to 360 days after the offence. No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out. Amount, deadlines and appeals: all about the ZTL fine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive into central Trento in the evening or on a Sunday?

No. The ZTL is closed 24/7, every day, public holidays included.

Is there a ticket to drive into Trento?

No. The only one-off access is a temporary permit from Trentino Mobilità for special needs, requested at least two working days ahead. Its price is not published.

My hotel is in the centre: what should I do?

Give your plate to reception on arrival and on departure: the hotel registers it and hands you a permit. Only hotels and B&Bs inside the ZTL can do this.

I drove in by mistake: can I leave without being photographed?

No: 11 cameras watch the exits. No source says whether simply leaving is fined.

Is my foreign disabled badge recognised?

Yes, but send your plate to Trentino Mobilità (permessi@trentinomobilita.it) before entering or within 72 hours, with a copy of both sides of the badge and an ID document.
