Right now in Taormina

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The signs on site always prevail.

In Taormina it is not a camera that stops you but a barrier. The town has no camera-enforced ZTL in operation: the one set up in 2012, split into zones A, B and C, had its activation suspended in October 2013, and the council's own forms from 2026 still say it is acting "pending the activation" of an electronically controlled zone.

What does exist is physical closure. Corso Umberto I, from Porta Catania to Porta Messina, is shut by two movable barriers, on Via Timeo and Via Damiano Rosso, and since 2026 Via Don Bosco and Via Fazzello have been closed the same way. They only lift for authorised vehicles, which open them with a phone app. So no camera fine will land on your doormat, but you cannot drive in either: the car stays in a car park outside the centre.

The zones and their hours

Corso Umberto I (Porta Catania – Porta Messina)

The town's shopping street, reached from Via Damiano Rosso (level with Piazza Duomo) and Via Timeo (at Porta Messina), together with the streets leading off it: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Via Teatro Greco up to the ancient theatre, Via Di Giovanni. The 4:00 to 8:15 window is meant for delivery vehicles, which must be out of the zone by 9:00.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, only delivery vehicles may enter.

There are no cameras here: the way in is closed by a barrier or bollards that only open for authorised vehicles.

Via Don Bosco e Via Fazzello (traverse del Corso Umberto)

Closed with electronic bollards under a council executive decision of 2 March 2026, quoted in the local police forms but whose text could not be found. Authorised users get three passages a day per household, return trips included, and only to reach their home or garage. Every passage is logged with plate, time and access point, and misuse costs the authorisation.

Piazza San Domenico

The stretch between Via Bonifacio and Via San Domenico, closed with padlocked hoops since March 2023. Only police, emergency services and vehicles entering private property may pass, plus deliveries from 5:00 to 9:00. No later act has reconfirmed the rule since 2023.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Parking. The council lists four public car parks outside the centre: Porta Catania (650 spaces), Lumbi (850 spaces, with a shuttle to Porta Messina), Porta Pasquale and Mazzarò. Prices are not given on the pages we checked. In summer 2023, when they filled up, the local police closed the roads into the centre and sent cars on to Lumbi, Piano Porto and then Mazzarò; we could not find whether this was repeated.

Hotels. No current rule for hotel guests has been published. The 48-hour deadline set in 2012 applied only to the camera zone that was never switched on, so it no longer counts. Ask the hotel before booking whether it can get the barrier opened for you.

Taxis. They can go up Via Timeo as far as their rank on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele; beyond that, taxis and private hire cars (NCC) only pass with a disabled passenger on board.

Blue Badge. These vehicles are exempt on the Corso, but the barrier only opens after a formal request to the local police command, with a copy of the badge. We found no mention of the national CUDE platform.

Residents. The digital pass introduced in May 2023 lasts five years and covers residents of Taormina and Castelmola, for up to three vehicles; its price is not published. It is a parking pass: barrier access has to be requested separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a ZTL camera fine in Taormina?

According to the official acts, no: no camera is in operation. The Corso is closed by barriers, and the local police check on the spot and against the logged passages.

Where do I park for the Corso and the ancient theatre?

In the public car parks at Porta Catania, Lumbi (shuttle to Porta Messina), Porta Pasquale or Mazzarò, then walk.

My hotel is in the centre: can it get the barrier opened?

The council publishes no rule for hotels. Ask the hotel before you book.

The barrier is up early in the morning: can I drive through?

The 4:00 to 8:15 window is for delivery vehicles, not for visitors.

Can a taxi drop me on the Corso?

As far as the rank on Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, via Via Timeo. Further in, only with a disabled passenger on board.
