Right now in Sorrento

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails. Signs and cameras: the guide.

Sorrento closes its centre mainly in the evening. From April to late October the ZTL Centro (Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia, Viale Caruso) switches on every day at 7.30 pm and stays on until 4 am. During the day the same streets are open, except on Sundays and public holidays between 10 am and 1 pm. So arriving in the morning is rarely the problem. The usual mistake is driving back into the centre for dinner, or returning to your hotel after 7.30 pm through a varco you drove through freely that afternoon.

There is also a short winter season, from 7 December to 6 January, when the zone only operates on Sundays, public holidays and the days before them. From 26 October to 6 December and from 7 January to 31 March it is switched off.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Centro

Brought back in spring 2023 after a suspension, it has been camera-enforced since 1 May 2023. It covers the route almost every visitor takes: Viale Caruso, Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia as far as Via Marziale, Via Correale from the Lauro car park, Piazza Sant'Antonino, Via San Francesco, Piazza della Vittoria and the road down Via Marina Grande.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

4 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.

ZTL Centro Storico

The lanes of the old town (Via San Cesareo, Via Fuoro, Via Sopra le Mura, Via Tasso, Via degli Archi), plus several streets it shares with the ZTL Centro. The only text describing how it works is a 2011 regulation, which mentions cameras running "0-24" without naming them. We follow it, but cannot say how many varchi there are. Via Fuoro and Via Tasso are probably its entrances, although no document says so.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive. Hotels in a ZTL: what to do, with each city's deadline.

Using a car park inside the zone

The garage registers your plate. Check with the attendant when you arrive.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and, depending on your contract, may charge an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel or garage covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate. What the rental company charges, and how to avoid it, is covered in a separate guide.

Parking. The council's Achille Lauro car park on Via Correale sits right next to the varco of the same name, so you can leave the car there without entering the zone and carry on on foot. Inside the ZTL, parking outside marked bays is banned even with a permit.

Hotel in the centre. The property must be inside the ZTL Centro and have a reserved parking space; otherwise only your first arrival and your departure with luggage are covered. The manager registers your plate, but the council publishes no deadline for hotels: there is only the general rule of 48 hours after the passage.

Blue Badge, electric and hybrid cars. There is no mention of the national CUDE platform. You give your plate to the freephone number as you pass, or on the council's online portal; the 48 hours afterwards only apply if you were prevented from doing so, and the municipal police assess the reasons. Hybrids follow exactly the same procedure as electric cars. No prices are published.

Taxis and private hire (NCC): only licences from Sorrento and other towns in Campania are covered.

Days before holidays in winter. These are not just Saturdays but also, for example, 7, 24 and 31 December and 5 January. On those evenings the zone runs from 7.30 pm to 4 am; the "right now" indicator only knows about Saturdays.

Festivals. For the patron saint's feast of Sant'Antonino on 13 and 14 February 2026, a temporary ZTL from 7 am to midnight closed Corso Italia, Viale Caruso and nearby streets. The little harbour of Marina Grande has its own ZTL, but no times have been published since 2020: go by the sign.

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies within the same ZTL, even if you drive through several times (article 198); two different zones mean two fines. For drivers living abroad, the notice can arrive up to 360 days after the offence. No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out. Paying from abroad, deadlines and appeals are explained in the ZTL fine guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive through Piazza Tasso during the day?

Yes, in season, Monday to Saturday: the ZTL Centro only runs from 7.30 pm to 4 am. On Sundays and public holidays it is also on from 10 am to 1 pm.

My hotel is in the centre: can I drive there?

If it is inside the ZTL Centro and has a reserved space, it registers your plate; otherwise only arrival and departure with luggage are covered. Ask how soon it does this.

Is there a day pass for tourists?

No. Temporary permits are only for documented needs. Park at the Achille Lauro car park on Via Correale.

Is the ZTL on over Christmas?

Yes, from 7 December to 6 January, but only on Sundays, public holidays and the days before them, mostly in the evening. In November and from January to March it is off.

Can I ride a scooter in?

Not while the zone is active: there is no exemption for two-wheelers.
