Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails.
Rome sells visitors no right of entry at all: no day ticket, no tourist pass, and since 1 July 2026 not even an electric car drives in freely. If you arrive by car, there are three legal ways in: a hotel located inside a ZTL, a registered disabled badge, or the electric-car permit at €1,000 a year. For everyone else, it all comes down to the clock.
By day, the historic centre closes on weekdays and Saturday afternoons, the Tridente for longer still, and Trastevere only in the morning. On weekend evenings four night ZTLs take over. The calendar also shifts with the seasons: in August the night zones and the Appia Antica switch off, from May to October Trastevere and San Lorenzo also close on Wednesday and Thursday nights, and Christmas has a regime of its own.
The zones and their hours
ZTL Centro Storico (diurna)
The historic centre inside the walls, from the Pantheon to the Trevi Fountain and from Campo de' Fiori to Monti. Off on public holidays, except during the Christmas plan. In July 2026 the first exit camera went up on Via del Teatro di Marcello; it is not yet in service.
It is active at these times:
- Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 18:00.
- On Saturdays, 14:00 to 18:00.
Outside these hours, access is free.
23 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.
Inside, the speed limit is 30 km/h.

ZTL Tridente (A1)
The triangle between Piazza del Popolo, Via del Babuino and the Spanish Steps, a stricter sub-sector of the ZTL Centro. It is the only zone closed to motorbikes and scooters too; the free permit is limited to set categories.
It is active at these times:
- Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 19:00.
- On Saturdays, 10:00 to 19:00.
Outside these hours, the rules of the “ZTL Centro Storico (diurna)” zone apply.
6 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.
Inside, the speed limit is 30 km/h.
ZTL Trastevere (diurna)
The district from Piazza Trilussa to Santa Maria in Trastevere. By day the ZTL lasts only the morning; in the afternoon you can drive in freely.
It is active at these times:
- Every day except Sundays, 6:30 to 10:00.
Outside these hours, access is free.

It is active at these times:
- Friday and Saturday nights, 21:30 to 3:00, except in August, public holidays included.
- Wednesday and Thursday nights, 21:30 to 3:00 (1 May to 31 October), except in August, public holidays included.

ZTL Appia Antica
Via Appia Antica between Via delle Mura Latine and Via Appia Pignatelli, and Via Ardeatina up to Via delle Sette Chiese, monitored since 19 September 2026. A rule found nowhere else in Rome: anyone may drive in, as long as they leave through the same camera on the same day. Only driving through is fined, and leaving after 19:00 is not penalised.
It is active at these times:
- Saturday and Sunday, 7:00 to 19:00, except in August.
Outside these hours, access is free.
The entrances are watched by 3 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Who can drive in
- Motorbikes and scooters: free everywhere except in this zone: ZTL Tridente (A1), where the same rules as for cars apply.
- Disabled parking badge: the number plate must be reported before you drive in.
- Electric cars: no automatic exemption; there is an annual permit (€1,000).
- Hybrids: no exemption for private drivers.
- Taxis and chauffeur cars (NCC): allowed once registered on the white list, free of charge.
- Residents: permit for their own sector.
Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets
Staying in a hotel
Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. It must do so on the same day you drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive.
Tickets for non-residents
There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (€102 for 24 hours), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.
Rental cars
The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and usually charges an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate.
At a hotel, permits are limited: one per ten rooms, and each covers only one number plate per day and per time slot. So mention the car when you book.
Disabled badge: Rome does not use the national platform. The badge is registered online (with SPID or CIE) and is valid at once; since 22 August 2026 only the main number plate may enter. A badge issued abroad must be sent by PEC to permessistica@pec.romamobilita.it; no processing time is given. Freephone: 800 154 451.
Fascia Verde: not a ZTL but a low-emission zone covering almost the whole city inside the GRA ring road. Monday to Saturday, 24 hours a day, it bans petrol, LPG and methane cars up to Euro 2 and diesels up to Euro 3, foreign plates included.
Christmas: the plan is set each year by ordinance. In 2025-26 the centre and the Tridente were active every day, public holidays included, from 6 December to 6 January, with longer hours, and off on 25 December. The 2026-27 plan has not yet been published; the “right now” indicator does not take it into account.
Rome in numbers
- 8 separate zones, none of them active around the clock.
- 61 cameras in total, ranking 2 of the 20 cities on this site.
- The strictest zone is closed 71.5 hours a week at this time of year.
Where official sources disagree
- Electric cars: three RSM pages updated between April and June 2026 still say they can drive in freely. That has been out of date since 1 July 2026 (dedicated page, 20 October 2026); we go with the permit.
- Trastevere and San Lorenzo nights: “Ztl, tutti gli orari” (21 October 2026) says “Wednesday to Saturday” with no season; “ZTL in Centro” (28 July 2026) limits Wednesdays and Thursdays to May–October. We go with May–October.
- ZTL Monti: in the 2023 open data, missing from every current RSM page. Left out.
- Number of ZTLs: “ZTL in Centro” still counts 5, without the Appia Antica, active since 19 September 2026. We include it.
If you drive in without a permit
Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies for the same ban, even if you drive through several times (article 198). No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Rome ZTL active on Sundays?
The daytime zones are off on Sundays, except during the Christmas plan. But the Appia Antica is monitored on Sundays from 7:00 to 19:00 (not in August), and Saturday's night zones run until 3:00.
Can I buy a ticket for the Rome ZTL?
No. There is no tourist ticket; temporary permits (€102 for one day) are reserved for specific cases.
My hotel is in central Rome: can I drive in?
Yes, if the hotel is inside a ZTL and enters your number plate no later than the day you drive in.
Is Trastevere closed in the evening?
On Fridays and Saturdays from 21:30 to 3:00, except in August, and from May to October on Wednesdays and Thursdays too.
Can an electric car enter Rome's ZTL freely?
Not since 1 July 2026: you need a permit, €1,000 a year for anyone not entitled to one otherwise, bought online with SPID or CIE. Electric two-wheelers remain free, except in the Tridente.
