Right now in Naples

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails.

Naples has no single ZTL but a patchwork: nine restricted traffic zones and eleven pedestrian areas, around a dozen of them camera-controlled. The old town closes during the day, the streets around Piazza dei Martiri at night, Via dei Mille and its neighbours only over the Christmas and New Year holidays, and two roads in Posillipo only in the warmer months.

Visitors need to remember two things. There is no tourist ticket: only a hotel located inside a zone can get your car in. And in the old town the closing time depends on where you enter: the cameras on Via del Sole and Via Mezzocannone stay on into the evening.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Centro Antico

The UNESCO-listed historic centre, split into four sectors: Decumano Superiore, San Biagio dei Librai (Spaccanapoli), Forcella-Tribunali and Santi Apostoli-Donnaregina. The hours above apply to the cameras on Via Miroballo, Via Duomo and Via Santa Sofia. The Via del Sole camera runs longer: until 10 pm Monday to Thursday, and until 2 am Friday to Sunday, on public holidays and also on the eve of public holidays.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

The entrances are watched by 4 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

ZTL Mezzocannone

Same hours as the Via del Sole camera, eves of public holidays included: on a Thursday before a holiday it stays closed until 2 am. Since 2016 it has formed a single ZTL with the Centro Antico, covered by the same permit. Motorbikes are not allowed in.

Outside these hours, access is free.

A single camera checks the entrance.

Via Mezzocannone

Aree pedonali di piazza del Gesù e via dei Tribunali

Piazza del Gesù is closed round the clock. For Via dei Tribunali (from Via Duomo to Via Nilo, with Piazza San Gaetano), the 2019 order that switched on its camera sets the ban with no time slot at all: we take this to mean it is permanent.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

2 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.

ZTL Tarsia-Pignasecca-Dante

Tarsia and the Pignasecca, redrawn in 2022, with a permit of their own. Inside it, Via Brombeis is a pedestrian area with its own camera, open to residents only; its hours are not published.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

ZTL Belledonne, Martiri, Poerio

The heart of Chiaia, from Via Calabritto to Via Carlo Poerio, with part of Piazza dei Martiri.

Outside these hours, access is free.

The entrances are watched by 2 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Vico Belledonne a Chiaia · Via della Cavallerizza

Aree pedonali di piazzetta Rodinò, Borgo Marinari e Nisida

Piazzetta Rodinò, inside the Chiaia night ZTL but closed in the daytime too; the Borgo Marinari below Castel dell'Ovo, whose camera sits on the pier leading to the castle; and the Nisida isthmus.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included.

The entrances are watched by 3 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Via Morelli

ZTL Marechiaro (via Alfano – piazzetta Marechiaro)

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive.

Using a car park inside the zone

The garage registers your plate. Check with the attendant when you arrive.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and usually charges an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel or garage covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate.

Your hotel. It can let in as many cars as it has parking spaces, and it registers your number plate itself on Smartmobility, the ANM platform. No deadline is published, so send your plate before you arrive.

No hotel inside a zone. Temporary permits are only for documented needs (a house move, building work, a ceremony) and must be requested by ordinary email to permessitemporanei.ztl@comune.napoli.it before you enter. No price is published.

Blue Badge holders. Naples keeps its own register rather than using the national platform: register at the counter or by PEC (certified email) to ztl@pec.comune.napoli.it, never by ordinary email.

Electric cars. A 2012 order, temporary for one year, admitted them with a paid annual permit; nothing more recent confirms it.

Streets with no announced camera. Via Padre Gaetano Errico, parts of the Vomero and Via De Sanctis have signed bans with no camera mentioned: the sign still applies. The Centro Direzionale has three cameras, but no published hours.

Naples in numbers

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies for the same ban, even if you drive through several times (article 198). No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive to Spaccanapoli?

Not between 9 am and 5 pm without a permit. After that, three Centro Antico cameras switch off, but those on Via del Sole and Via Mezzocannone stay on until 10 pm, or 2 am at the weekend.

Can my hotel get my car in?

Only if it is inside a ZTL or a pedestrian area, and only up to its number of parking spaces.

Is there a day pass for tourists?

No. There are only temporary permits for documented needs, at an unpublished price.

Can I drive through Piazza dei Martiri in the evening?

Not between 7 pm and 7 am without a permit. In the daytime, yes, except in the Morelli ZTL streets at weekends and on public holidays over Christmas and New Year.

Can I take a scooter anywhere?

No: only into the Centro Antico, Tarsia-Pignasecca-Dante (except Via Brombeis) and the Morelli ZTL.
