Right now in Florence
- ZTL Settori A, B, O …
- ZTL Settori F e G (San Niccolò, Cavalleggeri) …
Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails.
Florence runs its ZTL at two speeds. By day, sectors A, B and O, which cover the whole centre inside the ring roads plus the Oltrarno, are closed Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 7:30 to 16:00. On Sundays and public holidays you can drive in freely. From spring to autumn, though, a night ZTL is added from Thursday to Saturday, extending the closure until 3 in the morning and spreading to San Niccolò and the Cavalleggeri area below Piazzale Michelangelo.
Visitors have two options: stay somewhere inside the zone and have the hotel register your plate, or buy a day permit online, €5 for transit only or €15 including parking. Be careful around Santa Maria Novella station: it lies inside the perimeter, like many hotels, and that is often where a satnav takes you in without warning.
The zones and their hours
ZTL Settori A, B, O
Sector A is the historic core, from the Duomo to Piazza della Signoria and Santa Croce; sector B covers the rest of the area inside the ring roads, including the station district; sector O is the Oltrarno, from San Frediano to Porta Romana, with Palazzo Pitti and the Ponte Vecchio. All three sectors share the same hours.
It is active at these times:
- Monday to Friday, 7:30 to 20:00.
- On Saturdays, 7:30 to 16:00.
- Thursday night into Friday, 23:00 to 3:00 (2 April to 4 October).
- Friday night into Saturday, 20:00 to 3:00 (2 April to 4 October).
- On Saturdays, 16:00 to 3:00 the next day (2 April to 4 October).
Outside these hours, access is free.
ZTL Settori F e G (San Niccolò, Cavalleggeri)
Two small sectors along the Arno, downstream and upstream of the Oltrarno: San Niccolò (F), below Piazzale Michelangelo, and the area around Cavalleggeri and Piazza Piave (G). Only the summer night ZTL applies to them.
It is active at these times:
- Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, 23:00 to 3:00 (2 April to 4 October).
Outside these hours, access is free.
Who can drive in
- Motorbikes and scooters: free access, no paperwork.
- Disabled parking badge: the number plate must be reported before you drive in or within 48 hours afterwards, on the freephone number 800 339891. Up to 2 plates can be registered permanently, free of charge.
- Electric cars: free permit, open to non-residents too, to be requested before your first entry (valid for 5 years).
- Hybrids: no exemption for private drivers.
- Taxis and chauffeur cars (NCC): allowed once registered on the white list, free of charge.
- Residents: permit for their own sector.
Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets
Staying in a hotel
Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. It must do so no later than 3 hours after you enter. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive.
Using a car park inside the zone
The garage registers your plate. Check with the attendant when you arrive.
Tickets for non-residents
Visitors can pay to drive in: €5 transit only, for the day; €15 transit and parking, for the day. The ticket must be bought before you pass the gate.
Rental cars
The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and usually charges an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel or garage covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate.
The day permit is sold online only, on the portal of Servizi alla Strada, the city company in charge of permits, after registering. You receive a PDF with a QR code to print and display behind the windscreen. It is valid for the calendar day (from the time of purchase if bought on the day), up to 10 days a month and 60 days a year per plate, and it can be neither cancelled nor refunded.
At a hotel, the hotel registers your plate on the city portal for €1 per registration. Your passage is covered if it took place in the 3 hours before registration; during the night ZTL the hotel has until midnight the following day. Your route must be as direct as possible, and stopping outside the hotel is limited to 30 minutes. For taxis and chauffeur cars, the permanent white list is reserved for Tuscan licences; others use a temporary registration by text message (€1, valid for 3 hours). Finally, the whole city is also covered by the “Scudo Verde”, a low-emission zone that only targets the oldest vehicles (Euro 0 and 1).
Florence in numbers
- 2 separate zones, none of them active around the clock.
- The strictest zone is closed 71 hours a week at this time of year.
Where official sources disagree
- Night ZTL hours: the “ZTL” page on the city's website, still online in October 2026, gives a 23:00 to 3:00 closure on all three nights for 2022. The rules in force (the “Disciplinare”) set a closure for sectors A, B and O that starts as early as 20:00 on Fridays and 16:00 on Saturdays, running straight on from the daytime hours. We follow the rules. The exact dates of the summer season are set each year by ordinance (first Thursday of April to first Sunday of October): we show the 2026 calendar, as this year's ordinance could not be consulted.
- Cap on day permits: the English version of the official page says 70 days a year, while the Italian version and the rules say 60. We follow 60.
- €15 rate: the official 2018 fee table only mentions the €5 permit; the €15 one (transit and parking) appears in the Servizi alla Strada FAQ.
If you drive in without a permit
Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies for the same ban, even if you drive through several times (article 198). No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out.
Frequently asked questions
