Right now in Bari

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails. How to recognise an active varco.

Bari has just one ZTL, and it fills a small peninsula: Bari Vecchia, the old town bounded by Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Piazza Massari, Corso De Tullio and the Lungomare Imperatore Augusto seafront. The Basilica of San Nicola, the cathedral and the Castello Svevo are all inside it. The rule leaves no gaps: the quarter is reserved day and night for permit holders, there is no ticket for visitors, and no city document sets out a procedure for hotel guests.

The modern grid-plan centre, the Murat district around Via Sparano, is not a ZTL. The rules changed in December 2025 and again on 1 July 2026, through orders that are not published online: for 2026 we rely on the city's press releases.

The zones and their hours

ZTL Città Vecchia (Bari Vecchia)

The old town has three kinds of street: the “strade azzurre”, where only permit holders may drive and park; the “strade verdi”, open only to bicycles, mopeds and motorbikes, with no parking; and the pedestrian areas. Since 1 December 2025, Strada Attolini and Strada Santa Chiara have been strade verdi closed off by barriers. The Castello entrance, live since 1 July 2026, is only for authorised delivery vehicles, on working days from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00.

There are no time slots here: the ban applies day and night, all year round, public holidays included.

The entrances are watched by 5 plate-reading cameras, known as varchi.

Inside, the speed limit is 20 km/h.

Aree pedonali della Città Vecchia

About 55 streets and squares, including Piazza San Nicola, Largo Abate Elia, Piazza Mercantile, Piazza del Ferrarese and Strada Palazzo di Città; Strada Arco Basso joined them on 1 July 2026. Vehicles enter from the seafront, via Via Michele Genovese or the Arco Largo Urbano II, only to reach a garage or, on working days from 9:00 to 11:00 and from 16:00 to 18:00, to supply a shop in the area, stopping for 20 minutes at most with a parking disc displayed.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

2 number-plate cameras (“varchi”) watch the entrances.

Inside, the speed limit is 10 km/h.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (€3 for 24 hours), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and, depending on your contract, may charge an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. What the rental company charges, and how to avoid it, is covered in a separate guide.

Where to leave the car. Pay-and-display bays open to everyone line the edge of the old town, on working days from 8:30 to 20:30: Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo and the sea side of the Lungomare and of Corso De Tullio. For the bays on Via Ruggiero il Normanno and around Piazzale Mincuzzi, no source explains how to reach them without passing a camera. Piazzale Mincuzzi itself has been reserved since July 2026 for holders of a ZTL or ZSR-D pass.

The modern-centre trap. In the Murat district, as in parts of Madonnella and Libertà, you can drive freely but parking is paid: it is a regulated parking zone (ZSR), not a ZTL. Via Argiro, pedestrianised in October 2026, has no camera reported by the city, but it is still closed to cars.

Staying in Bari Vecchia. Neither the 2023 order, nor the recent press releases, nor AMTAB, the company that issues the permits, provide any access for guests. The temporary permit at €3 a day requires an exemption granted case by case: it is not an option for a holiday.

Disabled badge. In 2023 the Polizia Locale asked drivers to phone before entering, giving the camera, the plate and the badge number, for a single entry only. Its website no longer works, and the procedure has not been confirmed for 2026. Taxis may drive in at any time; private hire cars (NCC) are not mentioned.

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies within the same ZTL, even if you drive through several times (article 198); two different zones mean two fines. For drivers living abroad, the notice can arrive up to 360 days after the offence. No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out. Paying from abroad, deadlines and appeals are explained in the ZTL fine guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bari's ZTL open on Sundays or at night?

No. Bari Vecchia is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, public holidays included.

My accommodation is in Bari Vecchia: can it register my plate?

No city document provides for this. Ask your host where to park and walk the rest of the way.

Are Via Sparano and the Murat district in the ZTL?

No. Murat is a paid parking zone where you can drive freely. Bari's only ZTL is the old town.

Can I still park at Piazzale Mincuzzi?

Not as a visitor: since 1 July 2026 it has been reserved for ZTL and ZSR-D pass holders.

Can motorbikes enter Bari Vecchia?

Only on the “strade verdi”, which are open to bicycles, mopeds and motorbikes. Elsewhere they need a permit, just like a car.
