Right now in Arezzo

Worked out with Italian time and public holidays from the official hours. The sign at the gate always prevails. Signs and cameras: the guide.

Inside Arezzo's Medici walls, two neighbouring streets can run on different clocks. The council puts every street of the walled town into a category: ZTL A for the wide ring of the historic centre, ZTL B for the shopping spine of Corso Italia, a pedestrian zone for the main squares, and open streets for the rest. ZTL A closes only in the morning and late afternoon on working days; ZTL B stays closed from 8:00 to midnight every day.

Since 1 January 2025 a brand-new camera system has watched these streets, and some of the cameras film the exits as well as the entrances. There is no tourist ticket: park outside the zones, or drive into ZTL A only when it is open.

The zones and their hours

ZTL A

Around 90 streets: the upper town (Via Ricasoli, Via Pellicceria, Via San Domenico, Via XX Settembre) and the south-western quarter around Piazza San Gemignano. The rules say 'working days' without naming Saturday; the sign, however, shows the crossed-hammers symbol, which in Italy includes Saturday. We therefore treat it as Monday to Saturday.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

14 cameras read number plates: 9 at the entrances and 5 at the exits.

List of the 14 cameras (varchi)

Via San Domenico – ingresso · Vicolo del Fanale – ingresso · Via San Lorentino – ingresso · Via Guido Monaco (Poste) – ingresso · Porta Trento e Trieste (via Garibaldi) – ingresso · Via Guadagnoli / via Macallè – ingresso · Viale Buozzi – ingresso · Via Nencetti – ingresso · Via Isidoro del Lungo – ingresso · Viale Buozzi – uscita · Via Isidoro del Lungo – uscita · Borgo Santa Croce – uscita · Via Padre Caprara – uscita · Piaggia di Murello / via San Lorentino – uscita

ZTL B

About 30 streets: Corso Italia from Via Spinello to Via dei Pileati, Via Madonna del Prato, Via di Seteria, Via Bicchieraia and the side of Piazza Grande that the roadway runs along.

It is active at these times:

Outside these hours, access is free.

10 cameras read number plates: 9 at the entrances and 1 at the exits.

Zona Pedonale

Piazza Grande, Piazza del Duomo, Piazza San Francesco, Piazza della Libertà, lower Corso Italia and Via Vasari. It has no cameras of its own: in practice you can only reach it through ZTL B.

It is closed to unauthorised vehicles 24 hours a day, every day, Sundays and public holidays included: there is no quiet hour when you could slip through.

Who can drive in

Visitors: hotels, rental cars, tickets

Staying in a hotel

Only accommodation located inside the ZTL can register your number plate. A hotel outside the zone gives you no right to drive in. Give your plate number to reception as soon as you arrive. This access is only for dropping off or picking up luggage, then the car must leave the zone. Deadlines for every city are compared in our guide to hotels in a ZTL.

Tickets for non-residents

There is no day ticket for tourists. Temporary permits do exist (€10 for one day), but only for the specific cases the city lists, not for sightseeing. The simplest option is to park outside and walk or take a bus.

Rental cars

The fine notice goes to the rental company, which names you as the driver and, depending on your contract, may charge an admin fee, before the fine itself reaches you, sometimes months later. A registration made in time by your hotel covers a rental car just as well: all that counts is the number plate. The rental company's fees are set out in the rental car guide.

Open streets inside the walls. Via Roma, Via Spinello, Piazza Guido Monaco and Via Crispi are outside the ZTL. The trap is at the junction: turning from Via Roma or Via Spinello into Corso Italia or Via Madonna del Prato takes you past a ZTL B camera.

Day access. It costs €10 (€13 for an N2 van), is requested and paid online before you enter, only for a genuine need such as loading, and one vehicle can get no more than 20 a year. It only covers 8:30 to 12:00 in ZTL A, and 8:00 to 11:00 and 14:00 to 16:00 in ZTL B.

Hotels. The council publishes no deadline for registering the plate, so give it to the hotel when you book.

Electric cars and disabled badges. The permit covers fully electric vehicles only: it opens ZTL A at any time, but ZTL B only from 8:00 to 11:00, 13:00 to 16:00 and 20:00 to midnight. With a badge issued by another town, report your plate before driving in; in an emergency, within the following 48 hours.

Giostra del Saracino. On the day of the joust, in June and September, the ZTL is suspended from 8:00 to midnight. That does not mean free access: officers close the streets around Via Garibaldi from 8:00 to 21:00, and around thirty streets become no-parking with towing.

Summer evenings. From 15 May to 12 September 2026, parts of ZTL A and B and Via Roma become pedestrian-only on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:00 to midnight, even for permit holders. The dates change every year.

Where official sources disagree

If you drive in without a permit

Driving past an active gate without a permit costs €83 to €332 (article 7 of the Italian Highway Code), cut by 30% if you pay within 5 days. Since the 2024 reform, when the passages are recorded by camera rather than by an officer on the spot, only one fine per calendar day applies within the same ZTL, even if you drive through several times (article 198); two different zones mean two fines. For drivers living abroad, the notice can arrive up to 360 days after the offence. No licence points are deducted. If you think you were entitled to enter (hotel, disabled badge), contact the office named on the notice before paying: a late registration can sometimes still be sorted out. To appeal or pay from abroad, see our guide to the fine.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Arezzo ZTL active on Sundays?

ZTL A is not. ZTL B stays closed from 8:00 to midnight, and the pedestrian zone at all times.

Can I drive into ZTL A on a Saturday?

Not from 8:30 to 12:00 or 17:00 to 20:00: we treat it as active Monday to Saturday.

Is there a day pass for tourists?

No. The €10 day access is for specific needs only and must be requested before you enter.

My hotel is in the centre: can I drive there?

If it is inside the ZTL, yes, to unload, once the hotel has registered your plate. Then park outside the zone.

What happens on Giostra del Saracino days?

The ZTL is suspended, but officers close the streets around the joust. Leave the car outside the walls.
